the long journey of EatTiamo
The story behind EatTiamo is something that all the international students and workers have experienced at least once in their lifetime. Even the ones who have loved and enjoyed most their experience, who have never felt a strong home-sick have found themselves, sooner or later, craving even the most simple dish from their native country.
People who have never done such experiences may find it pretty odd, but its actually pretty true: when you leave your country, food becomes all of a sudden really, really important. If that's true from people all over the world, for us Italian - for whom food plays a big part in everyday lifestyle. Finding Italian Food abroad can be hard - especially if you are not in a metropolis, the cost can be really high and the risk of fake-Italian products is even higher.
Necessity is the mother of invention, somebody would say, so when the two friends and founders were craving a good Mozzarella and dreaming about high-quality Spaghetti, they started thinking how they could bring Authentic food directly to the doorstep of American families, while at the same time helping small and medium producers and preserving the Italian culinary tradition abroad. The answer was, needless to say, EatTiamo. After 3 years and 1000 families, our mission is exactly the same: raise awareness about Authentic Italian Food.
The table, the epicenter of the Italian Culture
Here at EatTiamo, we all had experiences abroad and we all noticed a thing that was pretty strange for us. Even if our apartments were comfortable and furnished, the most important piece of furniture was decidedly missing: a table. For an Italian the table is something fundamental. It is indeed in our culture to gather at the table for dinner, to speak about the day, to share emotions, thoughts, moments, because here meals are not only the moment to feed the belly, but also to feed the soul.
In the past people used to gather for each meal, but with work schedules as they are, it is difficult to always find the time. However, dinner is an inviolable moment where we take our time to eat and to enjoy the homemade food prepared with fresh and simple ingredients.
Some people say that Italians think only about Food, and it is true because there is nothing better than pleasing your body and your soul at the same time. It is not just a matter of gaining the nutrients that the body needs, it is a matter of enjoying moments with the people whom you care about, a gift that our land and our passionate farmers give to us every day: what we put in a box is not only food, but the gift of the quality time you can spend with the important people of your life, having fun in the kitchen and eating together.
A growing community of Italian Food Lovers
As we have already written, Italian families love to gather at the table to share emotions, so we had the desire to create something more than a mere Italian Food Delivery service: we wanted to somehow reproduce the feeling of being part of a community, where everybody can share their thoughts, where recipes are passed down to friends and relatives and where everybody can say "WOW" in front of a delicious plate of spaghetti prepared by someone else.
That's why we created a magazine, an instagram profile and a facebook page and started collaborations with important food blogger and brand ambassador so that everybody can follow the step-by-step video tutorial and then share with us their creation and we are really proud when we receive pictures from California with dishes of home-made Pici worthy of a Tuscan Nonna!
The backbone of our community? Our Producers. We travel across Italy looking for the best small and medium producers, we personally try their creations, we listen to their stories and collect their precious suggestions. We attend to fairs and exhibitions, from the smaller to the bigger to cultivate important relationship with producers and other food-involved projects and raise awareness around the importance of Italian Food Culture.
The increasing Media Attention around EatTiamo
Three years have passed since EatTiamo was founded. It may seem a short period of time, but it has been an intense journey full of compelling challenges and great satisfactions. In 2017, Gioia - an important women's magazine published in Milan, gave us the Smart Award for Inventive "for interpreting in effective way the think global & act local motto".
Talking about feminine newspaper, our Detox Box appeared on the italian edition of ELLE. In the last three years we have also received lot of positive reviews from both national and international newspapers, that have encouraged us to always improve: la Repubblica and Il Sole 24 Ore, two of the most important Italian newspaper, have dedicated two articles to us, highlighting the innovative character and the digital propensity as the strenghts of our project.
In the US we have been interviewed by Food Navigator USA: another fun and interesting experience. One of our first satisfaction has probably been being cited by the Wall Street Journal as one of the tastiest and worldliest Food Subscription Boxes by the Wall Street Journal in 2016!
